Dentistry TechnologyA specialist dentist usually has more extensive training and experience in a specific field of dentistry than the general dentist.Although a general dentist can perform most procedures, there are certain complex procedures that are best performed by a dental specialist.
Dental specialists include:
Endodontics
Endodontists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of the inner layers of the teeth (i.e. nerves and blood vessels) and root canal procedures where they remove the diseased tissue in the tooth canal and replace it with a filling.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in all types of oral surgery and complex tooth extractions such as removing wisdom teeth (which lie extremely close to the lingual nerve), and apicectomy (i.e. removal of the part of the tooth which is embedded in the jawbone). These dental specialists also correct injuries and defects of the mouth and jaw.
Oral Pathology
Oral pathologists specialize in the treatment of diseases of the mouth. These dental specialists are normally laboratory based doing research and tissue testing for other dentists.
Orthodontics
Orthodontists focus on the diagnosis and treatment of misaligned teeth and poor bite. They specialize in the design and application of corrective and supportive appliances such as braces and retainers to realign crooked teeth and improve their function and/or the aesthetics of the mouth.
Periodontics
Periodontists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, and the surrounding structural tissue, which often starts as gingivitis and cause the gums to become inflamed. Their treatment often saves teeth that would otherwise have needed to be extracted.
Prosthodontics
Prosthodontists specialize in dental cosmetics such as the construction and fittings of implants, as well as bridgework, crowns, and dentures.
Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric dentists specialize in dental care for children, as their dental needs are different to those of an adult. These dentists are skilled at handling these nervous or panic-stricken young patients on their first visits to the dentist.
Implantology
Implantology is the specialist field of dental implants. This is a relatively new area of dentistry and interest in it is growing.
Other Popular Types of Dentistry
Many General Dentists also specialize in one or more of the different types of dentistry. Some of these more popular types of dentistry include the following:
• Aesthetic Dentistry
• Cosmetic Dentistry
• Restorative Dentistry
Different names for the same functions. These focus on dental procedures to repair unattractive and unhealthy teeth resulting in an aesthetically-looking smile.
Laser Dentistry
The use of lasers is a fairly new experience in dentistry and offers an excellent alternative for those who are terrified of the old and painful drilling dental procedures. Lasers are used to perform a wide variety of dental procedures such as whitening or bleaching, oral surgery, and plaque removal to name a few.
